Reference was made to the increase in dwelling house burglary in Sedgefield.  It was explained that houses left in darkness over the festive period had been targeted.   Police advice was to leave lights switched on when leaving your property empty on an evening.

Reference was made to neighbourhood priorities.  It was explained that continued Police patrols had reduced reported incidents at the following neighbourhood priority locations:-

·      St. Edmunds Churchyard/Wykes Close, Sedgefield

·      Play Park Maughan Terrace/Butterwick Road, Fishburn

·      Church Road/Library, Trimdon Village

·      Trimdon Colliery Community Centre, Trimdon Colliery

With regard to anti-social behaviour at Trimdon Colliery Community Centre it was highlighted that although street lighting had improved there were still incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, especially at the rear of the garages at Peel Avenue.  It was pointed out that a number of these garages were vacant.

Sergeant O’Connor brought to the Forum’s attention that neighbourhood priorities would no longer be discussed at Area Forums.  Police and Communities Together (PACT) meetings would now take place on a monthly basis.  These meetings provided members of the public with the opportunity to speak with local neighbourhood police teams in order to highlight their concerns/issues about the village they live in.  The meetings would be publicised with a press and poster campaign.

Although attendance at the first PACT meeting, which had been held that evening, had been extremely poor it was hoped that attendance at future meetings would improve.

LEISURE PROVISION IN THE RURAL EAST OF THE BOROUGH

A representative from Leisure Services will be present at the meeting.

Minutes:

G. Cooper, Youth Sports Development Officer, was present at the meeting to discuss leisure provision in the rural east of the Borough.

It was explained that the Sedgefield Sports Forum had carried out an exercise identifying what leisure provision there was available in the east of the Borough.  A timetable identifying what leisure activities were provided at each village was circulated to the Forum.  (For copy see file of Minutes).

It was pointed out that although a wide range of activities were available children under the age of 5 years were not targeted as a result of more stringent regulations.

The timetable of activities would be published on the Internet in the near future.

Detailed discussion took place in relation to how leisure activities were publicised.  It was explained that unless specific initiatives were ongoing local schools were not contacted regarding leisure activities.  The need to work with local schools was therefore emphasised.

Reference was made to the areas where there was limited leisure provision.  It was explained that gaps in leisure provision would be addressed through the Sports Forum.  The purpose of the Sports Forum was to bring people providing activities together in order to make improvements and avoid duplication.

Concern was expressed that a number of ongoing activities were not identified on the timetable.  It was explained that Leisure Services and the Sports Forum relied on people providing relevant information.

It was explained that if Sedgefield Borough Council or the Sports Forum received details of any club providing leisure activities, the activities would be included on the timetable of activities and a representative from the club would be invited to attend meetings of the Sports Forum.
