Scrutiny Sub-Committee for Promoting Strong, Healthy and Safe Communities

13 June 2005

Work Programme
Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny

Purpose of the Report

1. To update Members of the Sub-Committee about the work programme for the Sub-Committee.

Background
2. The Work Programme provides the opportunity to plan the work of the Sub-Committee. The programme, however, does change in response to new issues which arise. The Work Programme, therefore, provides a guide in terms of forward planning and project management. The timing of projects in the programme constantly needs to be adjusted. There are a number of projects which need to be reviewed, as set out in the attached table.

Future Projects
3. Possible subject areas for the Sub-Committee work programme in 2005/06 were considered at a member development session in January 2005 and reported to the last meeting of the Sub-Committee. To seek to finalise this, subsequent discussions have taken place with the relevant Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen.

4. Following this consideration, it is proposed that the Sub-Committee should scrutinise the following major issues:

  • A project to investigate Children’s Services: improved life chances - this is a priority for the Council and is very topical in the light of the “Every Child Matters” agenda for local authorities
  • An examination of Phase 2 of the Investing in Modern Services for Older People Strategy (in relation to the elderly mentally ill).
Recommendations

5. You are recommended to note the current Work Programme and to approve the major projects proposed for investigation.
