Purpose of Report
1. To explain the attached report about a visit to Durham Tees Valley Airport in March 2005.
Background
2. Durham Tees Valley Airport has major expansion plans. A group of Members from the Economy Sub-Committee visited Durham Tees Valley Airport on the 9 th March to discuss these proposals with Hugh Lang, the Chief Executive of the airport.
3. For this Sub-Committee, there are two issues to explore. Firstly, the prospects of increasing tourism for County Durham as a result of increased flights to the airport. Secondly, seeking to ensure that Durham’s local economy benefits most effectively from the expansion.
4. It appeared that there may be opportunities to provide more effective transport from the airport into Durham to promote tourism in County Durham. This issue has been raised with the relevant officers.
5. The expansion will be a major building project and the airport does intend to maximise the local benefits. The opportunities for Netpark in terms of ease of access to international travel was also recognised.
Recommendation
6. You are recommended to note this information and encourage opportunities to exploit the tourism potential arising from increased flights to Durham Tees Valley.
