                  Item: A12 Work Programme

Scrutiny Sub-Committee for Looking after the Environment

19 June 2006

Work Programme
Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny

Purpose of the Report

1. To update Members of the Sub-Committee about the work programme for the Sub-Committee.

Background
2. The Work Programme provides the opportunity to plan the work of the Sub-Committee. The programme, however, does change in response to new issues which arise. The Work Programme, therefore, provides a guide in terms of forward planning and project management. The timing of projects in the programme constantly needs to be adjusted. There are a number of projects which have been reviewed, as set out in the attached table and these are the subject of separate reports to the Sub-Committee.

3. The project to consider Access to the Countryside in County Durham is now completed and is reported elsewhere on the agenda for this meeting.
4. At a recent meeting of the Overview and Scrutiny Co-ordinating Panel a discussion took place about the need to re-focus the work of scrutiny. It was suggested that the sustainability and subsidised buses projects were now substantially complete and should no longer be subject to review. Accordingly, it is proposed that these projects will be removed from the future work programme. The review report of the Access to the Coast Scrutiny Working Group has also recommended that there is no need to carry out any further reviews of this project, subject to the continued monitoring of two outstanding issues.

5. Members will need to give consideration in the coming months to any
future scrutiny investigations they wish to undertake

Recommendations

6. You are recommended to note the current Work Programme.
