Purpose of Report 1. To up-date the work programme for the Sub-Committee.
Background 2. Trying to provide a manageable work programme for the Sub-Committee is likely to be a difficult task. The Sub-Committee will have control over the subjects it chooses. Advice suggests that, from a capacity point of view, and to seek to ensure that achievements are secured rather than information simply noted, a small number of projects should be undertaken.
3. In addition to projects chosen by the Sub-Committee, there will be significant issues which will need to be dealt with by the Sub-Committee as statutory consultee. These consultation issues by their nature cannot be anticipated well in advance and will need to be accommodated into the Sub-Committee’s work programme.
4. The template for the work programme is attached. This will need to be up-dated as the work of the Sub-Committee develops.
North East Public Health Observatory 5. The role of the North East Public Health Observatory is to:-
· Monitor health and disease trends and highlight areas for action.
· Identifying gaps in health information.
· Advise on methods for health and inequality impact assessment.
· Draw together information from different sources to improve health
· Undertake projects to highlight particular health issues
· Evaluate progress by local agencies and improving health and cutting inequality
· Look ahead to give early warning to public health problems.
6. To fulfil their role, they publish reports, hold conferences and workshops. 7. The Observatory has a work programme for this year. The role of Health Scrutiny is to provide complementary services to all the other bodies operating in the health economy. It is, therefore, sensible to take note of the work programme of the Observatory. The projects that they have identified for this year are:-
· Children with disability
· Health and lifestyles in County Durham and Darlington (a report has been published and a summary has been circulated to members of the Sub-Committee)
· Inequalities in cancer
· Diabetic pregnancy
· Key hospital episodes statistics
· Infectious diseases in the north east
· Mental health
· Maternity survey office report
· Up-dated health profile
· Diet and health
· Accidental injury
· Renal health
· Tobacco control.
Child Health Improvement 8. This project is continuing but should conclude its evidence shortly and can start considering recommendations.
Development session - 22nd April 2004 9. The members of the Sub-Committee will have the opportunity to consider the future work programme at a development session to be held on the 22nd April at Trevelyan College, Durham
Recommendation 10. You are recommended to note the work programme.
