Meeting: Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee (County Hall, Durham - Committee Room 2 - 04/10/2004 10:00:00 AM)
Item: A6 Scrutiny Projects and Work Programme
Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee 4 October 2004 Scrutiny Projects and Work Programme | |
Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny |
Purpose of Report 1. To up-date the work programme for the Sub-Committee.
Background 2. Trying to provide a manageable work programme for the Sub-Committee is challenging. The Sub-Committee will have control over the subjects it chooses. Advice suggests that, from a capacity point of view, and to seek to ensure that achievements are secured rather than information simply noted, a small number of projects should be undertaken.
3. In addition to projects chosen by the Sub-Committee, there will be significant issues which will need to be dealt with by the Sub-Committee as statutory consultee. These consultation issues by their nature cannot be anticipated well in advance and will need to be accommodated into the Sub-Committee’s work programme.
4. The Child Health Improvement project has reported and the resulting conference will be held on the morning of the 15
th November 2004 at County Hall. The assistance of Members of the Sub-Committee is sought in encouraging appropriate attendance.
5. A further review of Exercise Referral Schemes is underway and a report will be presented when all the information is available.
6. The next project chosen by the Sub-Committee was an investigation into obesity. An obesity strategy for the County will shortly be launched and the aim will be to use this strategy as the basis of the next Scrutiny project.
7. Funding has been made available by the Centre for Public Scrutiny to assist Scrutiny projects. The funding is distributed on the basis of annual bids which are determined on a regional basis. One bid is approved for each region. The successful bid for the North East Region was a project concerning breast feeding submitted by Darlington Borough Council. A bid was submitted for County Durham related to obesity to fund healthy eating initiatives in Easington. This, however, was not successful.
8. The template for the work programme is attached. This will need to be up-dated as the work of the Sub-Committee develops. .
Recommendation 9. You are recommended to note the work programme.
