Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee

11 July 2005

MRSA: An up-date of the position in County Durham
Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny

Purpose of Report

1. To explain the presentation to be given to the Sub-Committee about MRSA.

Background

2. In July last year, Dr. John Sloss, Consultant Microbiologist based at the Darlington and Bishop Auckland Hospitals, gave the Sub-Committee a presentation about MRSA. He explained the control strategies which were being deployed at that time.

3. The Sub-Committee asked for an up-date at this Sub-Committee. Dr. David Allison from the University Hospital, North Durham, and Vivien Hollyoak from the Health Protection Agency will explain the current position in County Durham relating to MRSA and surveillance controls in hospitals.

4. This is an issue which receives publicity from time to time and the incidence of MRSA in our hospitals is published on a regular basis. The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee has also recently published a report about hospital acquired infection seeking to encourage further improvement.

Recommendation

5. You are asked to consider the presentation.
