Item: A5 Commission for Public and Patient Involvement in Health - Latest Statement
Health Scrutiny Committee | |
Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny |
Purpose of Report
1. To provide further information about the future arrangements for the Commission for Public and Patient Involvement in Health.
Background
2. The Commission for Public and Patient Involvement in Health was to be abolished in August 2006. The Minister of State for Health has indicated that the date of abolition has now been deferred to the summer of 2007. She has also indicated that there will be a review of public involvement and accountability in the National Health Service. A copy of the briefing for Forum Support Organisations is attached as an appendix to this report.
3. As part of the announcement, it has been indicated that the proposal to reduce the number of patient forums and reconfigure around PCT areas has been suspended pending the outcome of this review. In addition, the appointment of Chairs by the NHS Appointment Commission which had caused some controversy has also been suspended.
4. Much of the detail which flows from this announcement has yet to be resolved. Bearing in mind the commitment which has been made to the patient focus for the Health Service, it is difficult to see how this latest development can assist in what is currently an unsatisfactory situation. It is hoped that the review can be carried out swiftly so that some certainty can be restored.
Recommendation
5. You are asked to note this information.
