9th January 2006 Campaign for a Smoke Free North East | ![]() |
Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny |
Purpose of Report
1. To explain a presentation to be given to the Sub-Committee about the Campaign for a Smoke Free North East
Background
2. The North East has the highest smoking rates in the country. Tobacco remains the single biggest cause of preventable death and disease in the region. To address this issue, a region-wide campaign has been introduced. This has been led by a local office funded by Primary Care Trusts in the region and the Public Health Group North East.
3. The Sub-Committee will recall that protecting young children from second-hand smoke was an important issue which arose in the investigation into child health in County Durham.
4. A presentation will be given to the Sub-Committee about progress being made in relation to tobacco control and smoke free initiatives in County Durham. A summary from the Smoke Free Campaign is attached.
Recommendation
4. You are asked to note this information as part of health improvement in the County.
