Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny


Purpose of Report


1. To explain the outcome of the consultation about the proposed merger between the Priority Services Trust and the Tees and North East Yorkshire Trust.

Background

2. The County Durham and Darlington Priority Services Trust and the Tees and North East Yorkshire NHS Trust provide services for the mentally ill and those with learning disabilities. The two Trusts have carried out a formal consultation exercise in relation to a proposal to merge to form one trust. The Health Scrutiny Sub- Committee was part of this consultation process.

3. The two NHS Trusts have considered the outcome of the consultation process. It is understand that more than 300 responses were received. Some of the issues raised echoed the issues put forward by the Sub-Committee.

  • Maintaining and developing the progress both Trusts have made in service user and care involvement
  • Ensuring local people have access to a wide range of local services
  • The challenges of working across a large geographic area
  • Maintaining and developing strong local partnership with service users, carers and partner organisations.
4. The two Trusts have agreed that the merger should proceed. They have suggested that the new arrangements should start on 1 April 2006. The Secretary of State for Health needs to make a final decision about the merger. The name suggested for the new Trust is - Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Trust.
