Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny


Purpose of Report


1. To explain the latest quarterly report from the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) Service relating to the Durham and Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust.

Background

2. The Durham and Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust PALS report for the period 1 st July - 30 September 2005 indicates a number of key themes which may be of interest to the Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee. The themes were:-

  • Of the 122 cases in the current period, there was a wide variety in the types of issues raised.
  • Appointments - Ten issues raised relating to delay - four of which were in relation to Podiatry
  • Dental - Nine issues relating to Dental Services, seven with regard to accessing a dental practitioner.
  • Concerns - 39 concerns were raised across a wide range of services. A high proportion of these concerns were very complex.
  • Out of Hours - Three issues were raised, one of which was pursued as formal complaint.
  • Prescribing/Dispensing - Two issues relating to prescribing/dispensing errors which were pursued as formal complaint (One case also referred to above under Out of Hours)
  • Ambulance - Five issues raised relating to complex ambulance bookings
Across the collective reporting mechanisms of PALS, Complaints, Incidents and Claims there were a number of key themes and trends identified.
