Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee

5th June 2006

Tees Review - Review of Acute Services
Report of the Head of Overview and Scrutiny

Purpose of Report

1. To explain the latest position about the work of the Joint Committee set up to consider the review of hospital services on Teesside which has an impact on South Easington and Sedgefield.

Background

2. Changes have been proposed in relation to hospital services in the Tees Valley which will have an impact on services for people in the south of Easington and Sedgefield. Because these changes will affect a number of local authority areas, a Joint Scrutiny Sub-Committee involving Durham, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, North Yorkshire, Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton Councils has been formed.

3. The current position is that the Joint Committee has put forward its views about the proposed changes. One area on which there has been a difference of views between the Joint Committee and the local National Health Service has been in relation to maternity, gynaecology and paediatric services.

4. The Health Service has proposed a specialist service covering maternity, gynaecology and paediatric services based at the University Hospital of Hartlepool. The Joint Committee is considering whether it should be requesting that there should be a specialist service both at Hartlepool and North Tees Hospital and whether this should be referred to the Secretary of State for Health.

5. In terms of the interests of residents of County Durham, these proposals would not have a major impact but there are perceived benefits in ensuring that Hartlepool Hospital has a long-term sustainable future.

Recommendation

6. You are asked to note this information.
