Report of the Head of Overview and Scrutiny

Purpose

1. To receive information (as part of their consultation) from the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust on their application to become a NHS Foundation Trust.

Background

2. The North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust are applying for NHS Foundation Trust status over the summer. If all goes to plan they will become an NHS Foundation Trust later this year.

3. The 12-week consultation period, which ends on 16 April 2007, provides an opportunity for key stakeholders to give their views on the Trust application.

Recommendation

5. That the Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee thank the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust for their presentation to become an NHS Foundation Trust.

6. That the Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny committee comment on the Trust proposals to become an NHS Foundation Trust, acknowledging that NHS Foundation Trusts are part of the government’s strategy to take public services away from central government control through creating a new type of NHS organisation designed to move decision-making to local organisations, communities, and patients.
