Scrutiny Sub-Committee for the Development of Lifelong Learning

19 December 2005

Work Programme

Report of Head of Overview and Scrutiny
Purpose of the Report

1 To explain the Sub-Committee’s work programme.

Background

2 Under the new Constitution, the Sub-Committee, following consultation with the Chairman and Vice Chairmen of the main Committee, sets its annual work programme.

3 The Work Programme provides the opportunity to plan the work for the Sub-Committee. This needs to be kept under review but provides a guide in terms of forward planning and project management.

Modern Foreign Languages

4. The Scrutiny report about a new approach to Modern Foreign Languages was reported to Cabinet on the 10th November 2006. Cabinet supported this recommendation. The next stage will be to assess progress for the more vocational approach to language teaching.

Lifelong Learning for Over 50s

5. The Lifelong Learning for Over 50s project is receiving evidence about this topic. An article in the recent edition of Countywide has raised some interest and a number of comments from residents of County Durham. A visit has been made to Grampian House in Peterlee to see the Day Centre facilities available for local people and to speak to older people who are attending the Centre. There was also the opportunity to view the intermediate care facilities at Grampian House. It was noted that many people who attended the day centre saw this as the highlight of their week and it was clearly a valuable service. A series of further meetings are being planned.

The Youth Service

6. The project to look at the Youth Service is also taking evidence. A visit has been made to the Mid-Durham Projects Club based at Gilesgate. The work of the club was explained and staff illustrated how the Service was operating within the targets set by the Government’s new strategy - Transforming the Youth Service. Discussions also took place with some of the young people who attended the youth club to assess their views about the benefits of being involved with youth work. Further evidence and visits are being planned.

Recommendation

5. You are recommended to note this information.
