The Council considered a report of the Corporate Director of Resources which sought confirmation of the conferment of the title of Honorary Alderman/Alderwoman upon retiring Members who qualified for the same in accordance with previously agreed criteria (for copy see file of Minutes).

Moved by Councillor Hopgood, seconded by Councillor Crute.

Councillor Miller referred to the late Councillor Morris Nicholls and asked whether the honour could be awarded posthumously.  The Head of Legal and Democratic Services replied that there was a legal debate whether this was possible and suggested that if he wanted to take it forward the matter could be considered by the Constitution Working Group.

Resolved:

That the Council confer the title of Honorary Alderman/ Alderwoman on the following former Councillors once they had indicated they would be prepared to accept the honorary title:

(a)         Edward Bell

(b)         Geraldine Bleasdale

(c)          Derek Hicks

(d)         Eunice Huntington

(e)         Garry Huntington

(f)           Sarah Jane Iveson

(g)         Oswald Johnson

(h)         Audrey Laing

(i)           John Lethbridge

(j)           Joyce Maitland

(k)          Alan Napier

(l)           John Robinson

(m)        Owen Temple

(n)         John Turnbull
